LISTENING -Kazuo Suzuki photo exhibition-

I have been back to Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi, Tokyo, where I just went out last week.

When I told an acquaintance about my visit to Midtown, he said, “Well, did you see that?”

???

It seems that I had bypassed the wonderful nature photography exhibition at the FUJIFILM SQUARE. I rushed back the following week to see the exhibition again.

Here it is.

This was a truly extravagant exhibition, where we were able to see at one time over 80 of representative works plus new works by the photographer Kazuo Suzuki known for his nature photographs of Urabandai, Oze, Oguni, and other areas.

The photographs were not the kind that make you say, “How beautiful or amazing are they?” The photographer’s ambition to “take a picture” was (as far as I could tell) rather weak, and the nature of the subject simply “was there,” or, to borrow the photographer’s phrase, “We can hear the voice of nature” in the stillness.

I am afraid it is more than a hundred years too early for poor amateur to speak of such impressions.

There was a corner where “photography is allowed” so I took a picture with my XF10.
When I see outstanding nature photography, I am simply overwhelmed, but this time, thanks to the comprehensive exhibition, in addition to that, I was able to touch on specific stances as a photographer practiced by Mr. Suzuki, such as “not only listening to beauty” and “insisting on no cropping”. It was a very stimulating experience for me.

Looking at the record of his works, we can see that he has been using mainly FUJIFILM medium format cameras such as GFX100 and GFX50S for his recent works, as can be seen from the fact that the exhibition was held at this venue.

In fact, he also uses a Pentax 645Z and a 645NII in his film days. He is also a one of famous professional Pentax user, having been in charge of Ricoh’s calendar photos and cooperated in the promotion of the Pentax K-1II in the past. I am ashamed to say that I only learned about him after seeing this exhibition.

At the time of this writing, the exhibition has already ended, but there are plans to hold another one in Osaka, and a photo book has also been published, so if you like nature photography, you may want to catch up with the exhibition.

I didn’t buy the photo book “Koe wo Kiku (Listening)” that was on sale at the venue because it was a bit heavy and large in size, but I regret to say that it is not yet available on Amazon.
