Aids for “100 Famous Views of Edo” walk

I have just started to take pictures of Utagawa Hiroshige’s “100 Famous Views of Edo” on a whim, but it’s not easy because I am dealing with the Edo period.

I always introduce my tiger’s seed book here. I am very grateful for this book, which covers all of the 100 views and provides explanatory information on what was painted where and where for all of the works.

However, from this information, it is not easy to determine which location in modern Tokyo it really is and in which direction the painter’s field of view is oriented. I have been able to get through several photo shoots in places like Nihonbashi, Kasumigaseki, and Hibiya, where I barely have some familiarity with the area, but the future looks bleak.

But now I am afraid for my future.
First of all, here is another book of God’s book. “Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo on Old Maps”.

For each of the 100 views, the map shows the location of the viewer on the old map. For example, in the “Sankei Yamashita-cho Hibiya Sakura-den” (below), you can see a figure in the upper right corner that says “I am looking from here”.
This alone makes my photo shoot location scouting dramatically easier.

In addition to this, I use a smartphone app like this “ Oedo Konjaku Meguri” I also got it. What you have is a friend who knows things.
This app, on a smartphone or tablet, shows an overlay of an Edo period map and a current map.” It’s a great thing to be able to quickly locate a place on a modern map when you want to “go here” on an old map, and you can even overlay maps from both eras and display them transparently, which is so clever that you’d think it was made just for me. ↓For example, you can see that the Shinji Pond in Hibiya Park is a remnant of a buried moat.

With this divine book and divine app, we will not have much trouble exploring the locations of the 100 Famous Views of Edo for now. I think we can say that the way forward has been opened up in no small measure.

However, there is no guarantee that you will be able to take pictures there in reality, and more importantly, that you will be able to take some interesting or good-looking pictures. That is another story, I hope you have a good time.
