Firmware update

During the New Year vacations, I checked the firmware versions of my digital cameras and updated the firmware, which I had neglected to do, so as usual, I am posting this article as a reminder.

The PENTAX K-3III is currently on firmware v1.70, but my camera was still on firmware v1.50, so I updated it. Yes, I had pretended not to look at Custom Image “Nine Autumns” and “Winter Field” because I was annoyed that I did not have the corresponding lenses. I checked the contents and found that v1.70 has not only custom images but also some interesting enhancements, so I hurriedly updated.

According to the official description, they “added Select (XS) to the AF area in AF when shooting in the viewfinder, enabling more pinpoint distance measurement point selection than Select (S).

I usually use Select (S) in AF-C, but I was dissatisfied that the size of the distance measurement spot was a little large even in S. I changed to V1.70 and looked at XS in the viewfinder, then I guessed that they made it the size of the “spot” that can be selected in AF-S (if so, it is equivalent to 70% of the size of S). It seems to be the size. Source here).

This is good! And while the AF-S spot is fixed in the center position, the Select XS is super easy to use because you can move it with the grizzly for example.

This kind of update is very welcome.

I also checked the Lumix G99 and GF10 to see if there were any updates missing, and it seems that Panasonic has completely overlooked the G99 when it comes to firmware updates for the camera body. But I did not know that not only the camera body but also the firmware of the lens side also needs to be updated. Nor I may have done it in the past and had forgotten all about it. Since all I’ve been acquiring lately are used lenses, I’ve been finding a lot of lenses that are not up to date with the latest firmware.

Four lenses were attached to and removed from the body and updated silently, with the camera getting angry at me for running out of battery capacity in the middle of the process. The official announcement says that the update is for the GH series bodies, so I don’t know if it makes sense for me to use it on the G99 and GF10, but it’s kind of weird to find out that the firmware is not up-to-date.
