The 117th of Utagawa Hiroshige’s 100 Famous Views of Edo is Takada Sugatami & Omokage bridge with Gravel Yard. The original picture is shown here.
The flowing river is the Kanda Waterway. The large bridge serving as the painting’s subject is the Omokage Bridge, while the small bridge visible just before the forest of Hikawa Shrine in the background is said to be the Sugatami Bridge. The former changed its notation but still spans the Kanda River at nearly the same location today.
Compared to Hiroshige’s Kanda Waterway, the Kanda River here is on a smaller scale, and the Sugatami Bridge no longer exists. The gravel riverbed has transformed into a densely packed residential area, but beyond this neighborhood, Hikawa Shrine still stands. Shrines and temples possess remarkable vitality.
The nearest stop here is Omokage-bashi Station on the Tokyo Sakura Tram (Arakawa Line). As someone with a light rail enthusiast streak, I simply had to capture this.
One more shot.
While walking towards next destination, I spotted a rather impressive temple. The mountain gate was magnificent, but the other gate—a bell tower gate?—was also breathtaking.
This temple, Ryocho-in, apparently has attractions like Kongo Rikishi statues within its grounds. I regret only snapping one photo at the gate and moving on this time.
