Breaking news during the program.
Although it’s only been on sale for a little over three months, the price of the LUMIX S1IIE seems to have dropped by nearly ¥50,000.
According to Panasonic, the “E” stands for “Essential,” implying “equipped with indispensable functions stripped of unnecessary features.” But in short, it’s a spec-down, price-cut bargain model. An “E”conomy model for “E”ntry-level users – the “Plum” in Japanese Plum-Bamboo-Pine hierarchy.
The price for the S1II without the “E” seems unchanged. Pure speculation here, but I suspect they anticipated the cheaper “Plum” model would sell best, yet it hasn’t performed as expected. Perhaps they realized they needed to undercut the actual market price of their virtual rival, the Nikon Z6III, leading to this sudden price cut?
Regardless of the reason, lower prices are always welcome.
However, for someone like me who still hasn’t fully mastered many features of the two-generation-old LUMIX S5, the S1IIE is definitely overkill, even if it’s the “Plum” model. When I handled it in-store, it felt surprisingly heavy and large for a flagship line, and it definitely seems like a barrier to entry.
First off, even with the discount, it’s still a hefty price tag exceeding ¥300,000. A few years ago, I would have laughed it off as sheer madness to even consider buying it.
…And yet, shamefully, the price drop suddenly makes it feel irresistible, and I start scheming about how to scrape together the money.
And actually, there’s another trigger for my desire. It’s the L-mount 200mm telephoto lens.
The recent release of the SIGMA 20-200mm F3.5-6.3 DG has shaken the core of my previous resolve: “Full-frame lenses stop at 105mm. Anything beyond that, I shoot with MFT.” Now that core is wobbling wildly, thinking “Maybe having something up to 200mm wouldn’t be so bad.” Since my resolve isn’t solid, I can’t clearly narrow down my options either.
For a high-power zoom, the new SIGMA is good, but the genuine LUMIX S 28-200mm F4-7.1 isn’t bad either. Comparing them, it’s this and that, and so on.
If you really need 200mm, shouldn’t you stick with a constant F2.8 70-200mm, or at least a constant F4, instead of resorting to a high-power zoom with inevitable compromises in performance? That said, those lenses are heavy and expensive, and well, you know.
Wasn’t it “full-frame lenses only up to 105mm”? Before buying more telephoto lenses, I should probably get a new body. (Back to the original point) What about the discounted S1IIE? Nah, my current S5 works fine, and spending 300,000 yen is just… well, you know.
And so, in 2025, my desire for gear remains unquenchable, and the autumn nights grow ever longer.
