Continuing from my article of June 22, I am thinking that if I were to switch to a full-size Lumix camera (S5 + L-mount lens) instead of a Pentax camera for the “100 Famous Views of Edo” photo tour, the Lumix S 20-60 on hand would probably not provide the angle of view I need and I would probably need to enhance the standard-range zoom lens. I am thinking that I will probably need to strengthen the standard zoom lens, and now….
I am thinking that I will “probably” need to enhance the standard zoom lens, and now……. So, I looked back at what kind of angles of view I have actually taken in this project and briefly analyzed them.
Since the beginning of this year, I have already taken about 25 photos of “100 Famous Views”, but let’s take a look back and check the angle of view (focal length) of some of them.
21mm(SIGMA10-20) *Focal lengths listed are 35mm equivalent.
52mm(SIGMA17-70)
75mm (HD DA16-50)
There are a variety of lenses and focal lengths used, and there is no nodal range from wide-angle to mid-range telephoto.
Here is a list of the number of cases by focal length.

There are clearly two peaks of bias, one in the 21-30mm wide angle range and the other in the 51-60mm standard range, and the total number of cases for the two peaks is 14, accounting for more than half (56%) of the total … conversely, the remaining 44% is widely spread out.
A closer look reveals that the 20-60mm range, including the two peaks, contains 18 cases (72%), which means that, for example, the LUMIX S5 and LUMIX S 20-60mm will cover about 70% of the required angle of view. This kit zoom, which I thought had a limited range of coverage, turned out to be surprisingly capable. I am sorry for underestimating it.
So what to do with the remaining 28%, or in the data above, 7 cases of the angle of view of 61mm or more? In theory,
1) Enhance the mid-telephoto zoom lens
2) Cover the mid-telephoto range with a single focal length lens
Either of the following can be considered.
In 1) if you think about enhancing the zoom lens, which is the best standard zoom lens? However, looking at the data of this article, it was confirmed once again that “compared to the 20-60mm, the 24-70mm lens does not offer nearly the same range of coverage”. I decided to remove the SIGMA 24-70 DG DN II from my consideration. The LUMIX S 24-105 and the LUMIX S 28-200 are the two most promising candidates, but the former is heavy and the latter is dark, so I still can’t make a decision. It is very difficult to decide.
What about 2) single focal length? I have a SIGMA 90 DG DN F2.8 at hand, so when I want to take a picture with an angle of view around 85-95mm, it might be a good training to improve my shooting skill by earning with my legs and using my head to manage with this lens. I am not sure about this at all.
If I may be so extravagant, it would be encouraging to have two small, lightweight, and nifty single focal length lenses in the 80mm and 100mm range, although I can’t find a lens I like at the moment for the 80mm, but for the 100mm, the LUMIX S 100mm F2.8 MACRO would be a candidate. The only problem is that this lens is very expensive.
I guess I shouldn’t say “extravagant” after all. First of all, if I carry two extra single focal lengths, the weight load will be not much different from carrying a telephoto zoom, and the economic load will definitely be more severe. For the time being, I guess I will try to see how much I can cover with the SIGMA 90mm.
So, after analyzing the focal lengths, I found that the range that can be covered by the LUMIX S 20-60 is surprisingly wide. As a result, I can now consider limiting the scope of additional investment. This is a step forward.
