I wrote this in the title, but I don’t have a preference. I have not yet gotten that far.
In addition. That’s not why…
For the past few months, I have been playing around on this blog, taking pictures of the current state of various locations in Hiroshige Utagawa’s “100 Famous Views of Edo”. Since the original Ukiyoe prints have an aspect ratio of approximately 2:3, I thought it would be a good idea to take photos in original 2:3, so I have been using an APSC Pentax K-3III camera instead of the micro four thirds camera that I have been using a lot lately.
The discussion of cameras and aspect ratios is succinctly summarized on this page from Adobe.
In the “100 Famous Views” game, most of the places I visit are new to me, so I mainly use the SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4, a convenient zoom lens that can be used wherever and however I need to set up my camera. I sometimes take the PENTAX HD DA 16-50mm F2.8 only when I know in advance that I do not need a telephoto range. The former is small and lightweight but has a bright and beautiful bokeh effect, while the latter, although a bit heavier, is characterized by its sharp and precise image quality, which is the best of all PENTAX lenses.
By the way, for 2:3, I can use a full-size Lumix L-mount lens among the equipment I have on hand, but unfortunately, I do not have a standard L-mount zoom lens that is easy to use in this situation. The LUMIX S 20-60mm kit is a good lens, but the zoom range is not sufficiently wide and the 60mm telephoto end (equivalent to a 40mm angle of view for APSC) is not very comfortable.
So finally, the topic of the title, “What about an L-mount standard zoom lens?”
This is the lens that has recently caught my attention. It covers an angle of view equivalent to the 16-70mm of the APSC lens that I am used to using, and isknown for its fine image quality throughout the entire zoom range with an F4 thread.
It’s a bit heavy, but if I had this, I could attach it to my Lumix S5 and go out and shoot “Full-size Views of Edo”.
Or, if you don’t want to go all the way to 105mm at the telephoto end and are satisfied with 70mm (although it will be heavier), you can consider the latest flagship lens with F2.8 as an option.
If you think so, why not buy them all, because these lenses are quite expensive and you won’t be able to finance them easily.
However, if you think about it (a DANGEROUS idea is growing), and if you want to make the most effective use of your limited funds and equipment, it might make sense to use these digital native high-resolution lenses with the latest mirrorless LUMIX L mount instead of the legacy SLR PENTAX K mount. It might make sense to take the plunge and convert some (high-grade) K-mount lenses into cash and reconfigure your equipment portfolio.
I’ve written that, but Really?
Can you switch roles between K-mount and L-mount in a good way?

Speaking of using our equipment, we should also return our Q-mount equipment, which has become an underutilized asset after the Lumix GF10, a small MFT camera, took over its role, to the market while there are buyers for it rather than letting it rot in a dry box.
If you can find a way to raise funds through such means, you can also acquire this lightweight, compact, high-power zoom lens as a talisman to supplement the telephoto side. No, since it is easy to take a heavy, serious lens out of the house, the main objective of a new introduction might be this one, which can be used conveniently.
If combined with a lightweight single focal length lens such as the Sigma i-series, it could be a great portable set-up for a nice photo walk.
Again I ask myself, Really? Is that what you want? .
My brain is constantly choosing this, that, and the other. Going back to the beginning, I have been “air-selecting” for the past few weeks without having decided or taking any action yet.
