#021 Shiba Atago-yama

The twenty-first view in Utagawa Hiroshige’s “100 Famous Views of Edo” is Shiba Atago-yama, the original painting is here.

I thought I could manage to take a picture with a similar atmosphere, since Atago-yama is still existing in the middle of Minato Ward and Atago Shrine at the top is also alive and well. But in a surprising turn of events, the picture turned out to look like this.

Yes, after a hundred years or more, trees do grow. The “you can’t see the view you should be able to see from the high point because it’s blocked by the grove of trees that have grown up” is a common landscape-snapping mistake.

Atago Shrine at the top of the hill. It is still a popular place to pay a visit.

However, it is difficult to make the impact of the old ceremonial costume as shown in the original picture, since it is hard to find people who pay a visit to the temple with costume play.

Also, the surrounding skyscrapers, which are actually taller than Mt. Atago, are somewhat distracting in the picture, so I have to be careful with the composition (lol).

On this visit, we climbed the mountain from the NHK Museum side in the back. I kind of like the atmosphere of this tunnel where the backside uphill entrance is located.

I thought I’d end with a photo of the front uphill approach, known as the “stairway to success,” because, although not as steep as modern skyscrapers, both the back and front approaches to Atago-yama are quite a tough climb,

But unexpectedly, the battery ran out here. I usually carry a spare battery pack with me, but on this particular day, it was an accident.

This is unusual for this blog, but I’ll leave you with a photo of the front staircase that I took with my phone at the end of the day.

This is not the time for unimportant thoughts such as, “Not a bad photo from a cell phone.” I’m intensely reflecting on my dead battery mistake.
