#110 Samezu Coast, Minami-Shinagawa

The 110th view in Utagawa Hiroshige’s “Famous 100 Views of Edo” is Samezu Coast, Minami-Shinagawa. Here is the original picture.

Since many of the pictures in the “Winter” section are of snowy landscapes that are difficult to photograph, I wandered around the bay area, looking for something that wasn’t like that, and ended up at Shibaura last time and Samezu this time.

Well, this is what the Samezu coast looks like now, which was once a thriving seaweed cultivation area.

Although the Tokyo bay has been reclaimed as far out to sea, part of the old Samezu coastline still remains as a canal. The seaweed farms have gone, and it seems to be a mooring for fishing boats and other boats now. If I had waited a little longer and waited for the sun to set, I think I could have made the atmosphere of the original picture even closer.

Also, as I have repeatedly pointed out, there is one thing I have to say to Hiroshige-sensei again this time.

“You can’t see Mt. Tsukuba from here.”
How much do you love Mt. Tsukuba?

For my part, I’d be willing to bet 100 PERIKA that even in the Edo period you couldn’t see it… No, if you had the crazy idea of looking down on it from a bird’s eye view like in the original picture, it might have looked a little smaller. I’ll stop myself from betting.

When I come to a place like this, I can’t help taking a photo of the scenery with the fishing boats and fishing gear.

Having had a taste of the fun of playing with LUT in my last article, this time I’m using a LUT called “Filmlike_V2” provided by the official LUMIX website. I think it really brings out the film-like feel of the photo, with the blacks looking a little dull.

I really liked the unadorned appearance of the boats waiting for their turn to go out, as well as the slightly seedy appearance of the fishing boat shop.

So that was the end of the Samezu episode.
