#044 Nihon-bashi street 1st block

The 44th view of Utagawa Hiroshige’s “100 Famous Views of Edo” is Nihon-bashi street 1stblock, the original picture is here.

The location is Nihon-bashi, but the “Shiroki-ya” curtain indicates that this is now the intersection of Eitai-dori and Chuo-dori. Many Tokyo residents who were born in the Showa period (1926-1989), like myself, probably know that the Shirokiya Department Store was later transformed into the Tokyu Department Store Nihonbashi and then into the current COREDO Nihon-bashi building complex.

So I stood at the four corners and waited for a troupe of Japanese-style entertainers to pass by…but it was not going to work out that way.
This is what you get on a weekend morning in the heart of the city, before the opening of the commercial center. It is a bit lonely with few people, but I hope you can feel the past and present of “Shiroki-ya” street.

Since we are here, let’s also look up at the COREDO skyline.

Not only was there something to look up at, but there was something to photograph underfoot as well. The small flowers in the planter on the pavement looked so fresh and beautiful that I crouched down to take a shot.

Another thing, across the street from COREDO, there is a Shiga prefectural products store, and even though it was before the opening hours, they were excited to feature the fact that the masterpiece novel “Naruse wa Tenka wo Torini Iku”, set in Otsu City, Shiga, won the Japanese Book Store Award. I also like this novel, so I’m going to take advantage of it and introduce it to you.
