#019 Oji Otonashi River weir, commonly the Waterfall

The 19th of Utagawa Hiroshige’s “100 Famous Views of Edo” is Oji Otonashi River weir, commonly the Waterfall. The original picture is here.

The title of the print is difficult, but first of all, Otonashi River is another name for the Shakujii River, which still flows through north area of Tokyo. Then the weir is a large stone weir built for irrigation in this area, which is called the Waterfall in common.

Unfortunately, the stone weir no longer exists, as the Shakujii River was largely repaired and a bypass channel was built after it was flooded by a typhoon in 1958. However, the water park built on the site is quite nice. if you put your mind to it, and the cherry blossoms are in bloom conveniently enough, you can almost feel the atmosphere of the original painting,

So I took this picture.

I personally liked this one, as I think it is quite a nice salve.

This park is located just a few hundred meters away from famous blooming site Asukayama(the 17th view spot). Many cherry blossom viewers walking around the park were praising it as “more beautiful than Asukayama”.

With the end of Golden Week I finally finished this year’s “100 Views of Edo: Cherry Blossom Viewing Tour”. Although I have lived in Tokyo for a long time, there are still many places of cherry blossom viewing that I am not familiar with, such as this one. I will probably continue to take pictures of the 100 Views during the cherry blooming season next year, so I will be able to enjoy new encounters with cherry blossoms again, for which I am very grateful.
