LUMIX GF10 and secret of the counter spell

A little extra income made me feel great and sparked a dormant desire for things. I finally got the Lumix GF10.

I have been using LUMIX G99 and have a certain trust in Panasonic m4/not 3 mount cameras, but it was not through them that I bought GF10, it started from “I want Ricoh GRIII”.

I have played with FUJIFILM XF10 so far, not having enough money to buy a GRIII at the right time, the same 28mm focal length and the same APSC size sensor for half the price. The XF10 is a good camera, but not the best one for me.
Then the 40mm GRIIIx was released and I wanted one! The price is as high as ever, but I thought I would finally buy it this time.

However, after I happened to see and touch the Lumix GF10 at a camera store, my thoughts changed completely. Why did I ignore this small and light camera until now?

Would I buy a GRIIIx (40mm = 60mm FF equivalent) and use it in combination with the XF10 (28mm = 42mm FF) and two digital cameras?

→If I attach the smallest zoom LUMIX G VALIO 12-32mm (=24-64mm FF) which is a kit lens to GF10, I can easily cover the angle of view of two cameras. Moreover, this small lens is known for its high quality IQ.
LUMIX G VALIO 12-32mm F3.5-5.6, the caname of two lenses in one body.

The size of the GF10 and GRIIIx are almost the same in height and width, but the thickness of the GF10 lens (24mm) increases, and the total weight of GF10 is 337g (262g for the GRIIIx). Can we forgive the fact that it is going to be difficult to “fit in a pocket”, which is the appeal of the GRIII?

→In fact, the FUJI XF10 at hand is “pocketable,” but I don’t usually use it that way. After taking it out of my bag, I carry it with one hand through the hand strap. If that is the premise, the difference in size and weight is within the margin of error.

Is it acceptable that the GF10’s imaging sensor size (m4/3) is smaller than that of the GRIIIx (APSC)?

→I don’t know how to theoretically resist the “sensor size is justice” argument, but when I used m4/3 16M pixel cameras in the past, I didn’t feel any difference between them and APSC except the difference in aspect ratio when viewing the photos I took. In my case, other than posting them on my blog, I view them on a 24-inch monitor or print them out in A4 size at most, but I have no problems.

And the price?

→Almost half the price of the GF10 and the kit zoom, plus a brighter standard single focal length lens as an extra. This would be too expensive for the GRIIIx and too cheap for the GF10.

With all these conditions, why not go out and buy it now?
This is the GF10 in all its glory. Viva compact and lightweight!

The 12-32mm kit lens is retractable, so it is neat and compact when stored.

I took a quick test shot while I went out to do some errands.

The camera has good solid resolution, soft bokeh in the front and rear, persistence in high-contrast scenes without blacking out, and clear skies and light cloud coloration. The gap between the affordability of the camera itself and the compelling image quality is fantastic!
I’d like to believe I made a good choice.

And the story doesn’t end here, there is a little side story (lol).

The fact is that the “Panasonic Lumix S5 Lens Kit”, which is currently running a cash-back campaign, has suddenly surfaced as a potential competitor for the budget allocation to buy a GRIIIx or GF10, and I was on the verge of buying it. The fact that you can become an L-mount full-frame owner for just under 200,000 yen is a powerful hypnotic spell. It is not the same Lumix brand, the same Panasonic, but a black magic that compels high consumption.

You may be tempted to buy it in a store or on a mail order site in a daze. To protect myself, I had to cast the following counter spell very hard.

Don’t look into the path leading to darkness!
Beyond the lightweight, reasonable-looking body and kit lens, a black swamp awaits you with an open mouth. Even if you get your hands on a full-size mirrorless camera now, you don’t have the strength and energy to buy and use all the heavy and expensive lenses. I have even less money.
Seek the light, not the darkness!

Thanks to whether the spell worked or not, I turned back without falling into the full-size darkness (lol). Oh no!

Where are the funds that were saved from being dissipated by the fall into darkness? You who thought, “Where did the money go?
There is almost no funds to begin with, but there is another.
I’ll tell you about it another time.
